The scoop on ice cream

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!

Hello everyone! My name is Stephanie Kolden and I am your 2017-18 Monroe Dairy Queen. What is one of the best cold, delicious dairy treats for the summer? Ice cream, of course! The average American consumes almost 22 pounds of ice cream per year, with the United States producing an estimated of 1.53 billion gallons of ice cream and related desserts annually. So that leaves Wisconsin as the third highest consumer of ice cream and Milwaukee the No. 5 city to consume ice cream, even though most of it is made in California. With chocolate syrup being the most popular topping, the top three ice cream flavors as expected are chocolate, vanilla and cookies and cream. But some weird flavors include avocado, garlic and jalapeno.

There are many ways to make this common dessert. You could use an ice cream maker, a blender or even shake it with your hands. The amount of difficulty is up to you. There are also different ingredients and measurements that go into each recipe. For example, it takes three gallons of milk to make one gallon of ice cream.

Ice cream dates way back to when Caesar was around. A first-century Roman emperor is said to have sent runners into the mountains for snow to be flavored with juices. Over a thousand years later, Marco Polo returned to Italy from the far east with a recipe that closely resembled what is now called sherbet.

Factories started making ice cream way back in 1851. They allowed large amounts of ice cream to be produced and shipped to cooling chambers to keep it creamy and cold.
