The Beat: Yoga and beer, all in good, clean fun

It's time to clear off the desk, and bring a couple tidbits of local interest to readers.

A Lutheran pastor goes to a cabin to practice non-traditional yoga. Sounds like the start of a bad joke, doesn't it? For former Monroe resident Laura (Smith) Gentry, it's reality.

Gentry's father, Burnell Smith, was the Monroe school district's superintendent from 1973 to 1983.

Gentry is pastor of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Lansing, Iowa.

Last May, Gentry became certified to teach others the technique of laughter yoga.

Earlier this month, Gentry held a laugh-intensive retreat at Sugar Creek Bible Camp in Ferryville, Wis. Twelve people huddled into the log cabin buildings for the retreat.

A medical doctor in India, Madan Kataria, founded laughter yoga 13 years ago. Breathing techniques were added to laughter exercises to deepen the impact of the workout.

"It has been a marvelous health ministry we provide to this community," Gentry said. "Those who participate in this club have seen a marked boost in their health and happiness."

And they probably took home some good jokes, too.

According to NBC-15 TV in Madison, it seems Minhas Craft Brewery in Monroe is having a little fun with its brewing neighbor to the north on Wisconsin 69, New Glarus Brewing Co.

Minhas uses a cartoon commercial for its new beer, Lazy Mutt Farmhouse Ale. In the cartoon, a dog is seen chasing a spotted cow up a tree. In another, a pack of dogs tip a black and white cow onto its side.

It's a reference to one of the New Glarus Brewing Co.'s most popular beers, Spotted Cow.

"Not that we're personally making an attack on our friends up the road, but we recognize they've had a lot of success with their beer and people recognize the cow," Minhas President Gary Olson said.
