MONROE - Start spreading the news - Monroe High School students will be singing in New York Sunday.
The 12 students will perform at Carnegie Hall as part of a choral group of 150 kids from schools across the United States.
It's a great opportunity, chorus teacher Judy Bennett said.
"It's exciting to be there," she said. "They're really looking forward to it."
The students will perform for about 2,000 people. Some admitted they were a little nervous, but they wouldn't miss the chance to see New York and perform at Carnegie Hall.
The students will be led by world-famous composer and conductor John Rutter, who has been acclaimed by BBC Music magazine.
According to the Oxford University Press, Rutter has guest-conducted or lectured at conferences and universities in North America, Europe and Scandinavia.
Bennett said it's an honor for the students to be led by such a famous composer and conductor.
"Even college teachers are impressed by the fact we get to perform," she said.
The students know that from the time they leave Monroe to the time they return there will be a lot of work. They have rehearsals most of the day Friday and Saturday morning. And, another dress rehearsal is scheduled for Sunday, prior to the concert, which takes place at 2 p.m.
Bennett has made time for sight-seeing, as well. Visiting New York will enable the students to attend Broadway plays, visit the Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center and shop at Macy's. Also, they plan to visit Ground Zero.
They also plan to be out in front of the "Today" show Monday, March 15, and hope to be on national television.
It will be a busy five days.
"Time goes by so fast while you're there," Bennett said.
This is the fourth time she's taken students to New York, and each time she's enjoyed the trip as much as the kids.
"I love seeing the students' eyes when they first see New York, and the lights of Time Square," Bennett said.
The students return home about midnight Monday, March 15.
Students and adults going on the trip include, Bennett, Veronica Andraski, Brenna Bazley, Morgan Boeck, Dylan Cleaveland, Catherine Doyle, Tara Fetterolf, Sean Garde, Ian Geyer, Pauline Gogin, Eric Grau, Paige Morfey, Tyler Moser, Delores Petit and Jennifer Sefcik.
