MONROE - Police are seeking a suspect in a burglary that took place at a Monroe business Wednesday morning.

Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley said the burglary was reported at 4:03 a.m. at Discount America Hobby & Motorsports, in the 1000 block of 3rd Avenue.

Security camera footage from the store shows an unmasked suspect shattering the business's glass door at 2:28 a.m. and entering through the hole before leaving seconds later with a large remote-controlled car.

Darren Wellman, manager at Discount America, said the item stolen was a Losi 5IVE-T off-road remote-control truck, worth about $1,500. The item is silver in color with bright orange highlights.

Wellman said the suspect had visited the store for about 45 minutes the day before, claiming to be interested in dirt biking. The suspect then wandered throughout the store, presumably "casing the joint," Wellman said.

Security footage shows the suspect to be a white male in his 20s, approximately 6 feet tall with light brown hair and short facial hair. Wellman said the suspect had a full sleeve tattoo on his left arm, other tattoos on his right arm and some tattoos visible on his chest.

Wellman added that the suspect did not change clothes between his first appearance in the store and the burglary. The suspect was wearing jeans and a black t-shirt.

Wellman said this was the first time the store had been burglarized.

Smash-and-grab burglaries are the most common thefts to take place in the Monroe area, Kelley said. However, there has not been any sort of string of such burglaries recently.

Kelley said the investigation into the incident is ongoing. Anyone with information about the crime or the suspect is encouraged to contact the Monroe Police at (608) 329-2400.
