Suspect sought in fraud scheme

The Green County Sheriff’s Office wants help identifying a man they say has entered local businesses falsely claiming to have permission from the owner to take money in a string of recent thefts. Surveillance video shows the suspect driving a minivan or hatchback-style car.

MONROE — Police are seeking the public’s help in identifying a suspect in several cash thefts from Monroe-area business.

One of the thefts occurred at a rural Monroe business in the W5400 block of County DR at about 5:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, according to Green County Chief Deputy Tom Moczynski.

“I’d characterize this as a theft by trick or fraud,” Moczynski said. “What’s happening is a white male is going into area businesses and claiming to know the owner or management and saying he was pre-approved to receive money from the business.”

Moczynski said he’s aware of two similar recent thefts in the city of Monroe.

“I would just caution area businesses, if anyone comes in saying that they were approved to get cash from the business, have their employees call management right away,” he said.

Surveillance video from the County DR business shows a man dressed in dark clothing and dark knit hat. The suspect vehicle appears to be a minivan or hatchback-style car.
