Surveys to give glimpse of county

NEW GLARUS - How can Green County be a community of choice for the next generation?

On Jan. 21, members of the Future Forward! Green County initiative will be discussing the results of a series of seven surveys they conducted in 2009 to address needs in Green County.

"The surveys are a hand print, a measuring of Green County, in how the next generation sees us," said Sheila Berrey, spokesperson for the group.

The Future Forward initiative will be able to use the results to set action plans according to the needs of the community, for example, what good things does Green County have to market, and what things does the county need to work on.

Berrey explained that the surveys' results can be used "to help us retain and attract and engage" the next generation.

The surveys targeted an audience between 22- and 40-years-old; although, all age groups were part of the surveys. Age groups can be determined from the results.

The surveys identify Green County's assets and gaps in seven categories, according to a statement from Future Forward.

• Vitality - commitment to personal health and physical environment.

• Earning - breadth and depth of occupational options and health of the local economy.

• Learning - lifelong and expanded learning practices, and education, continuing education and re-education opportunities.

• Social capital - community commitment to diversity and its citizens' social, professional and political engagement.

• Cost of lifestyle - housing, food and transportation costs.

• After hours - how the next generation connect with peers.

• Around town - accessibility, or physical connection, commuting and access to shopping, eating and entertainment options.

The results will be analyzed from 5-8 p.m. at Toffler's, New Glarus. Jill Leitzen, a Future Forward leader and committee member, will lead the analysis.

The meeting is open to the public. Future Forward initiative chairman, Nikki Matley, will conduct the meeting.

Any community leader interested in knowing what might help to keep or bring back Green County's talented youth should consider attending, Berrey said.
