NEW GLARUS - A 34-year-old man who committed suicide Wednesday, June 5 in a home across the street from the New Glarus Elementary School was not outdoors with his gun, police say.
New Glarus police responded to a report of a suicidal man in the 10 block of 14th Avenue at 12:24 p.m. Wednesday and put the school on lockdown since there was a playground full of children directly across the street.
The man was found dead from a self-inflected gunshot wound after police forced entry into the home. Police determined there was no danger to the community and ended the school lockdown.
The man did not got outside the residence with the gun, according to Sgt. Jeff Sturdevant. The suicide happened inside the home.
