Student fees to drop slightly

MONROE - Student fees in the Monroe school district will be slightly lower next school year than they were this year.

The Monroe school board unanimously approved changes to the fee schedule at a meeting Monday.

At the high school, families will no longer have to pay the $3 fee for physical education or the $2 fee for science in grades nine and 10. Total student fees at MHS for all grade levels will now cost $62.

Business Administrator Ron Olson said at a previous meeting that the district was able to get a better price for middle school physical education shirts - $8 instead of $14 - and elementary school assignment/ handbooks - $3 instead of $6. The changes bring the total student fees at MMS to $40, down from $46 last year. Student fees at the elementary schools will cost $39, down from $42.

Some of the fees included in the totals don't need to be paid every year, unless a replacement is necessary, such as the MMS physical education shirt and the carrying cases for electronic devices at the middle and high schools. The carrying cases cost $9 at MMS and $25 at MHS. Fees for students in 4K will still total $20 for classroom materials.

All other fees in the school district - including admission to athletic events, athletic participation and other activity fees - will stay the same next year as they were this year.

Board member Mary Berger was absent.
