BRODHEAD - Tanner Strunz, 17, of the Brodhead FFA Chapter, was named the national winner in the Turf Grass Management-Entrepreneurship/ Placement Proficiency award program at the 82nd National FFA Convention, Oct. 21-24 in Indianapolis.

Proficiency awards recognize FFA members who excelled as agricultural entrepreneurs, employees or volunteers while they gained hands-on career experience. Turf Grass Management is one of the 47 FFA proficiency award categories offered at local, state and national levels. The Turf Grass Management proficiency award is sponsored by John Deere, as a special project of the National FFA Foundation.

In 2006, Brodhead FFA member Tanner Strunz combined two of his passions - his love of the outdoors and mowing lawns - to start his own business, Strunz Lawn Care. He mows 14 lawns in the Brodhead area, and in winter removes snow from 13 driveways.

He also offers tree removal services and has been awarded an exclusive contract to take care of the lawn at Brodhead Chevrolet. He is supported in his endeavors by his parents, Tom Strunz and Jean Day, and his FFA Advisor, Mrs. Jillian Beaty.
