Streetscape contractor will have to pay damages

MONROE - Any costs to the city, including the Monroe Fire Department, in conjunction with the gas leak Monday will be billed to E&N Hughes, according to Alderman Jan Lefevre.

The cost is not yet known.

E&N Hughes was hired by the City of Monroe in May to perform the streetscape construction on the Square.

Monroe Main Street Director Barb Nelson was at the site when the gas line was hit. Nelson said the gas line was marked on city construction plans as being located under the parking ramp.

When crews began digging they discovered the gas line, and then began carefully following the line, she said.

However, at one spot "the line took an unexpected turn upward, for whatever reason," she said. "And that's when they hit it."
