MONROE - More than three inches of rain and heavy winds caused damage throughout Green and Lafayette counties over the weekend.
Green County Sheriff Randy Roderick said his department received 23 reports of trees down between 2:30 and 7 p.m. Sunday, throughout the county. Although deputies responded to as many reports as they could, they weren't able to respond to all. Where deputies did respond, they confirmed that trees were on or across the roads, Roderick said.
In all cases, local townships were notified of the reports and were able to take care of the problems.
Roderick said the majority of the reports came from west of Monroe, north to New Glarus.
No roads were closed Monday, Roderick added.
In Monroe, Honey Creek went over its banks, most notably near 4th Avenue West and in Twining Park. However, only a couple of larger limbs and two small trees near the country club and Monroe high School were damaged, Street Supervisor Tom Boll said.
The Lafayette County Highway Department had eight to 10 workers out Sunday cleaning up downed trees, Highway Commissioner Tom Jean said. The workers were sent to County N and County F in Blanchard township.
The Lafayette County Sheriff's Department reported power lines and trees down in Blanchard township.
Jean said two trees toppled over in Blanchard township due to the heavy rain. He said the ground was saturated and the trees fell over.
There were also reports of trees across the road north of Darlington, he added.
Flooding was also reported on roads in the southern half of the county following the thunderstorms.
"Some of the shoulders along County W, County O and County U south of Shullsburg were washed out," Jean said.
