Stolen diesel fuel trailer still missing

The Green County Sheriffs Office is investigating the theft of a red fuel trailer similar to this one, but with two 55-gallon barrels that are blue rather than the white tank pictured here. The trailer was stolen from a large construction site along Decatur-Sylvester Road in the Town of Sylvester in the early morning hours of July 5. The department is encouraging those who will be spending time in the woods or in fields this fall to report any sighting of this trailer. (Photo supplied)
SYLVESTER - Though the theft of a large fuel trailer from a construction site happened in July, the Green County Sheriff's Office wants to make everyone aware it is still missing as fall and winter set in.

In this effort, pictures of a similar tank were re-posted on the department's Facebook page Oct. 19. The original post was made July 21 following the theft from a large construction site on Decatur-Sylvester Road.

Green County Detective Betsy Krantz said the department wanted to make the public aware of the trailer's appearance and that the theft was still under investigation because this is the time of year people are out roaming the woods and in fields, and the lack of foliage overall would make a red trailer more visible.

"We're getting into hunting season where someone might stumble across something in a field," Krantz said. "Someone might see something like this and not realize it's stolen property."

Krantz said she did not want to identify the exact location of the construction site to protect the privacy of the company and its clients. The trailer was taken between midnight and 4:30 a.m. July 5. It held two 55-gallon blue barrels holding 50 gallons of diesel exhaust fluid and roughly 800 gallons of diesel fuel.

Green County Sheriff investigators currently have no leads. The incident was reported to the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security. Krantz said when such a large amount of diesel is stolen, officials are required to report it. She encouraged everyone to take notice of any item which may resemble the trailer.
