MONROE — Lafayette County emergency crews responded to a motorcycle crash last Sunday that seriously injured an Illinois man, who was flown to Madison.

Just before 6:40 p.m., the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center reported the crash — with serious injury — on County W, between the intersections of Dimmicks Road and Blackhawk Road, in the Town of Monticello.

Lafayette County Sheriff’s Deputies, Apple River, Ill. Fire Department and Shullsburg EMS were immediately dispatched.

“The first Lafayette County Deputy arrived on scene and found the operator of the motorcycle was laying in the ditch on the south side of CTH W,” said a news release from Lafayette County Sheriff Reg Gill. “The injured operator was breathing, but unresponsive.”

Police identified that driver as 20-year-old Cameron R. Mapes of Stockton, Ill. He was on a 2009 Harley Davidson eastbound on County W, and failed to negotiate the curve. Then, police said, Mapes left the road and swerved onto the gravel shoulder on the south side of County W; lost control, and overturned. Mapes was ejected during the crash.

Shullsburg EMS rushed Mapes to Lafayette Hospital + Clinics, where he was transferred to UW Hospital by UW MedFlight.

“Speed and alcohol are suspected of contributing to the crash,” said the press release. “Mapes was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.”

The crash remains under investigation by the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office. The motorcycle was severely damaged and towed from the scene.
