MONROE - The state of Wisconsin wants the money collected from an illegal gun raffle.

In court documents filed Tuesday in Green County Circuit Court, the state has asked for more than $3,000 collected by Christopher R. Schindler during a gun raffle and also from a Super Bowl pool conducted in February.

According to the complaint, $3,313 was collected "through the commission of crimes of gambling and an illegal lottery."

The state demands the money be turned over. The complaint said Schindler has 45 days to respond. If he doesn't respond, the court could grant a judgment against him.

Schindler declined to comment when contacted Wednesday by the Times.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) conducted the search Feb. 16 at Friendly Inn, 1335 17th St., Monroe, and the home of owner Chris Schindler, 2724 Second Ave.

According to a search warrant filed at the Green County Courthouse, investigators found numerous completed raffle entry slips and gambling and raffle documents at Schindler's house. They also found more than $3,300 in cash at the bar, two personal checks, two cases of pull tabs, one jar of pull tabs, numerous documents of names and firearms lists and 45 completed raffle entry slips and other gambling and raffle documents at the bar.

Court documents indicate DCI began its investigation in January after receiving an anonymous complaint about a gun raffle at the bar. An entry form for the raffle said the bar would give away 15 different firearms, including shotguns, rifles and handguns, for $100 per ticket.

On Jan. 12, an undercover agent went to the bar and paid a $100 entry fee for the gun raffle. An employee at the bar said she would leave the money for "Chris," and confirmed that the raffle would take place at the bar, according to the warrant.
