NEW GLARUS - As the cost for college continues to increase, parents and students are encouraged to save for the future.

"The cost for four years of college at University of Wisconsin is about $48,000," Wisconsin State Treasurer Dawn Marie Sass said Monday during her visit with New Glarus middle and high school students. She told them the benefits of a college degree and offered them a chance to win $1,000 through a statewide contest.

"A person with a college degree will make $1 million more in their lifetime than a person without a college degree," Sass told students. "Of course, we buy things and we don't always save, so I'm not saying all of you will be millionaires."

The contest asks students to submit a video about the steps necessary to get to college. Students can make a video to tell people they are saving for college, their search for the right school or how they have searched for financial aid.

The video must be one minute or less and can be made individually or in groups of three. Winners will receive $1,000 they can use for the EdVest college savings account. Students also can win $500 if they finish in second- or third-place.

This is the contest's first year and Sass said she hopes it appeals to students and becomes popular.

Other contests for students include a coloring contest for first-, second- and third-graders and an essay contest for students in grades four, five and six.

All entries, coloring, essay and video, must be submitted by Nov. 26 and sent to KnowHow2Go Wisconsin, attention Molly Dillman 1738 Van Hise Hall, 1220 Linden Drive, Madison, Wis. 53706.

EdVest, Wisconsin's college savings program, is in its 11th year and helps parents and students save money for college. As little as $15 a month can be deducted from payroll or a one-time fee of $250 is required to start saving, Sass said. After the initial deposit, parents can add as much as they want. Sass said more than 240,000 people participate in the EdVest program every year.
