Stars to shine at MAC

MONROE - In less than a month the Monroe Arts Center (MAC) will open the 2008-2009 entertainment season with something for everyone.

On Friday, Sept. 26 legendary singer and songwriter Don McLean will entertain audiences at the MHS Performing Arts Center (PAC) in what is sure to be a sold-out performance. Known for such hits as American Pie, Vincent (Starry, Starry Night), and Crying, McLean has been hailed as "the voice of the century" by Roy Orbison. This show is the first of three exciting performances in the Monroe Arts Center's PAC Stage Series.

On Oct. 25 the Wisconsin-based group, The Front Porch Boys, will kick off the MAC Stage Series with their genuine and truly traditional style of bluegrass music.

Saturday, Nov. 22 is the return of that show-stopping group of fun-loving guys, who revive the musical memories of the 50s and 60s Be-Bop and Doo-Wop era. In a new show titled "Dry Clean Only," Four Guyz in Dinner Jackets deliver an unbeatable production filled with glorious four-part harmony, personality and plenty of humor.

Direct from their own Hughes Brothers Celebrity Theatre in Branson, Mo., the five Hughes Brothers present their hugely entertaining stage show "From Country to Broadway" on Saturday, Feb. 14 at the MHS Performing Arts Center.

Voices Unlimited will perform at MAC on March 28. With members hailing from Northern Illinois and Monroe, this group sings a variety of blues, pop and gospel all with a jazz influence.

The Legend in Black - Songs & Stories of John and June Carter Cash will be presented on April 18 at PAC. The show is hailed as "one of the best tribute shows to Johnny Cash on the planet."

Bill Cayley not only dresses the same as Johnny, but he plays guitar and sings the great Cash songs such as "I Walk the Line," "Folsom Prison Blues" and "Ring of Fire."

On May 16 Dennis Stroughmatt & Creole Stomp will close the MAC season and leave Monroe audiences breathless and cheering for more in a concert packed full of Creole Zydeco, Cajun, Blues and New Orleans Swamp Pop music.

The return of the Sunday Afternoon Concerts begins with the Ancora String Quartet on Sept. 14, the Wisconsin Brass Quintet on Oct. 12, and pianist Catherine Kautsky on Nov. 9.

For an 11th season, the ever-popular Community Showcase of Talent will bring some of most talented individuals in the area to the PAC stage for two performances in January. The MAC and MTG are teaming up once again to present the holiday favorite, A Christmas Carol. Seven performances at MAC will be presented on Dec. 5, 6, 7, 12, 13 and 14.

In celebration of Monroe's Sesquicentennial, this fall MAC presents three Sesquicentennial Evenings in which local residents will enlighten us about Monroe's past, remind us of our shared history and enhance our understanding and appreciation of this great small town.

A Sesquicentennial Forum Prelude scheduled for Sept. 18 features keynote speaker and former Monroe resident, Kenneth Behring. On Oct. 9 a Sesquicentennial Forum presents former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson, The Swiss Colony president John Baumann and UW-Whitewater Chancellor Richard Telfer. This is an opportunity to hear from and exchange ideas with figures of national prominence and experience, representing government, business and education. The forum will look back at the past, but focus on the future.
