MONROE - E & N Hughes plans to begin work today at the northeast corner of the Monroe downtown Square.

The corner will be blocked to traffic entering or leaving the Square.

Main Street task force, block captains, Mayor Ron Marsh, City Engineer Al Gerber and representatives from Fehr-Graham & Associates met Friday, June 5, with general contractor E & N Hughes Company to discuss the start of the Downtown Streetscape Project.

E & N Hughes has brought materials and equipment to the site.

Other intersections will remain open, with traffic routed to the center ring at the northeast section of the Square to allow flow all around the Square. Access to businesses is a primary concern. Everything possible is being done to alleviate, or be prepared to alleviate, any issues that may arise, according to Monroe Main Street.

City crews are removing signs, trash cans and other items from the first construction area in preparation for the work. Business owners are making specific plans they deem necessary to survive and thrive during the project, according to a Main Street statement.

Main Street encourages all business owners, employees and residents to use one of the many available parking lots as much as possible.

The Monroe Main Street Web site, www.MonroeMainStreet.org, will be regularly updated with maps of daily detour routes and available parking.
