BELOIT - Beloit City Council vice president Mark Spreitzer will run for the Wisconsin State Assembly 45th District seat.
Spreitzer will run as a Democrat. He announ-ced his candidacy in a news release Thursday, Dec. 5.
He is running to succeed Rep. Janis Ringhand, who announced this fall that she is running for the state Senate.
The 45th Assembly District includes the eastern part of Green County and the western part of Rock County.
Spreitzer graduated from Beloit College with a degree in political science and worked for former Senator Russ Feingold's 2010 campaign. Since April 2011, Spreitzer has served on the Beloit city council, and has been council vice president since 2012. Spreitzer is the assistant director of Alumni and Parent Relations and Annual Support at Beloit College.
"During my time on the council, I have seen how state decisions affect local communities," said Spreitzer. "I have been disappointed in the loss of local control when Madison decides that it knows better than locally elected representatives. I have been disappointed that partisan politics trumps common sense in the legislature these days, and local communities are often not consulted on issues that affect them."
Spreitzer said while on the Beloit council, he has supported public-private partnerships to attract larger businesses and create jobs, as well as new infrastructure and lending programs to help small businesses revitalize the downtown.
"While we have made important progress on job creation, we need to do more, and the Republican majority must work with Democrats to make that happen. We must continue to support public education, not shift valuable school dollars to private schools against the wishes of communities like Beloit. As we have done in the past, Wisconsin must step up and lead the way to efficient, affordable health care by running our own insurance exchange and expanding access for those who need it most through accepting federal Medicaid funding."
