MONROE - "Three. Two. One."
With that, racers rolled down the track to the finish line Saturday at the annual Pinewood Derby race at Abraham Lincoln Accelerated Learning Academy.
The Pinewood Derby is a Cub Scouts tradition and is one of the highlights of the year, Cub master Jim Hauck said.
"They really look forward to this," he laughed.
Seventeen Cub Scouts from first through fifth grade tried their luck at a first-, second-, or third-place trophy and the chance to go onto Pecatonica, Ill., for the next round.
Whether they made their cars by themselves or had their dads help them, the boys were ready to race.
The boys race according to age, so it's fair for everyone.
For each race, two cars are placed at the start, which is about 3 to 4 feet off the ground. The height gives the cars the speed they need to race down the track.
The races take only a few seconds, but there is plenty of excitement. The boys gather near the track to see which car is the fastest. They cheer each other on and comment between themselves over which car they expect to win.
Race Hagen and Brett Lyne, both 8-year-olds from Monroe, had fun competing. Hagen was excited about his second-place finish, because that meant he moved on. Lyne wasn't too bothered by his third-place finish, however.
"This is really fun," Brett said, with a big smile.
This was the second year the two Cub Scouts took part in the derby.
For Brendon Breault and Sam Tackett, their first year as racers was quite an event.
Their dads helped them get their cars ready, and they tried to make them as fast as they could.
"We put some holes in mine because that makes it go faster," Breault said.
The two boys cheered as all of the racers made their way down the track.
When it was over, the Scouts took home their trophies. The racers who won't move on don't hang their heads when the day is over.
They got to see some good races, they had fun and they even had some pizza.
