MONROE - Drinking water testing is available for those who are interested in learning about what is in the water they drink. Testing is for all residents with private wells in the Towns of Decatur, Jefferson, Spring Grove and Sylvester, as well as those who live outside the towns.
The program is an opportunity to have well-water tested at a reduced cost and learn of the results during an educational program with drinking water experts.
The program is not mandatory or regulatory but completely voluntary. Those who participate will receive the results of their water tests during an educational program in December. Results will be kept confidential.
Special bottles are required for these tests, and there is a cost for testing. There are three packages available; all three packages cost a total of $113.
Packages are:
Homeowner Package; includes tests for nitrate, coliform bacteria, pH, alkalinity, hardness, conductivity, corrosivity and chloride. The cost is $49.
Metals Package. Tests for copper, lead, iron, manganese, zinc, potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium. The cost is $45.
Triazine Screen; includes tests for triazine type pesticides like atrazine. The cost is $27.
Bottles for the water testing program are located at:
Spring Grove Town Hall, N2475 County GG, Brodhead from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14 or from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 15. Bottles can be dropped off at the Spring Grove Town Hall on from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 17.

Results will be available Dec. 11, during a 90-minute educational seminar presented at 6 p.m. at the Green County UW-Extension office.
If there are problems with water, including bacteria or high nitrates levels are detected, those who were tested will be notified by mail within two weeks of sample date. Those who are unable to attend the program to obtain complete results, they will be mailed.
