MONROE - The City of Monroe has four wards coming up for alderman elections in April 2012 - and currently not enough candidates to fill them all.
Candidates, new or incumbent, have until the end of the work day Jan. 2, 2013, to register their campaigns, collect and return 20 signatures on nomination papers and declare a candidacy.
City Clerk Carol Stamm said her office will remain open that day until 5 p.m. to take all candidate papers.
Chris Beer is back in the race again, this time for Ward 6.
Beer was elected alderman for Ward 9 before redistricting in late 2011 cut her off from the ward, making her ineligible to run in 2012.
Aldermen Sara Conway and Jan Lefevre, elected under the previous boundaries for Ward 6 and Ward 4, have both filed non-candidacy papers.
That leaves the new Ward 4 without any candidate for the spring election. Ward 4 is the general area of 16th Street and south, between 11th and 17th Avenues.
Up for re-election, Brooke Bauman, alder for Ward 2, and Reid Stangel, alder for Ward 8, have registered their candidacies at the city clerk's office.
Stamm said anyone intending to run for a seat on the Common Council must register their candidacy at her office in city hall and return nomination papers by 5 p.m. Jan. 2. Candidates could start circulating nomination papers Dec. 3, after registering their campaign.
Villages, cities, towns and schools will hold elections April 2, along with the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Justice of the Supreme Court, and Court of Appeals judge in District 4 that includes Green and Lafayette counties among others.
If a primary is needed, it will be held Feb. 19.
