Small fire at MHS put out by staff member

MONROE - A fire that started in a bathroom at Monroe High School on Tuesday was quickly put out by a staff member and posed no danger to students.

MHS Principal Chris Medenwaldt said a student notified the staff member of the fire in a bathroom near the science wing, which is near the middle of the high school. The staff member picked up a fire extinguisher and put out the fire.

Medenwaldt did not want to name the staff member. Classes were not disrupted, as the fire was contained quickly, though some smoke lingered and the Monroe Fire Department was called.

"I'm sure there were plenty of students that didn't know it even happened," Medenwaldt said.

The fire ignited sometime late morning, Medenwaldt said, and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the fire department. From pictures posted to the MFD Facebook page, the fire appears to have started near a sink and scorched a portion of a wall. MFD Chief Daryl Rausch did not return phone calls prior to publication time.
