MONROE - About five blocks of the Badger State Trail in Monroe have been closed to repair a sinkhole, the Department of Natural Resources announced Monday afternoon. The stretch between 9th Avenue North to 14th Avenue might reopen prior to Memorial Day weekend.
There are no specific detours recommended around the area, but bicyclists and hikers can use public streets or trails at Monroe's Twining Park to bypass the closed area, DNR manager Steve Johnston said.
"Of course, folks are welcome to use the trail north and south of the closed area," he said.
Johnston said he "hoped that the trail will reopen prior to the Memorial Day weekend."
The almost 33-mile trail runs from Basco, about five miles south of Verona in Dane County to Clarno in Green County at the Illinois state line, where it connects with the Jane Adams Trail. It offers bicycling and hiking through a scenic, rural landscape.
It also connects to the Capital City, Military Ridge and Sugar River Trails, along with the City of Madison bike system.
