Significant fire damage to Monroe home

MONROE - An early-morning fire caused extensive damage to a Monroe home Tuesday.

The Monroe Fire Department was called at about 12:15 a.m. to the home of Sam and Elizabeth Price, at 1204 19th St., in Monroe. The Price family got out of the home safely, but two cats died in the fire.

Monroe Fire Chief Daryl Rausch said the blaze started in the kitchen, but the cause still is under investigation. There were 36 Monroe firefighters on the scene, along with Green County EMS and the Monroe Fire Department. Crews left the scene at 4:45 a.m.

Rausch said there was $65,000 in estimated damage to the home. There was significant damage on the first floor, and the kitchen was gutted. There is smoke damage on the second floor.
