BELLEVILLE - Green County Sheriff's deputies are continuing to investigate a shooting that took place Saturday.

Sheriffs deputies believe a gun was fired at a sport utility vehicle outside a home at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday at W3026 Doyle Road in Exeter township, about five miles south of Belleville.

Green County Sheriff Randy Roderick said the vehicle was spotted by deputies along Wisconsin 92 with a flat tire. Three men in the vehicle acted suspiciously, Roderick said. The men said they were on their way back to Madison when the tire went flat.

While investigating, deputies discovered a bullet hole in the vehicle's passenger door.

On Tuesday, Roderick said he would not release the names of the alleged shooter or the victims because it could impede the investigation. It is the department's policy not to release names of suspects until they are charged with a crime, Roderick said.

Deputies are talking to a third party to verify information provided by the alleged victims in the shooting about the gunman and the female said to be with him, Roderick said, adding all of the people involved have "ties to Madison."

The men told deputies they went to visit a friend who lives at the residence on Doyle Road. They said they got into an argument with the home's occupant, who fired at the vehicle as they left, according to Roderick.

Deputies went to the two-story home, but did not find anyone. They later obtained a search warrant and found that the occupants, an African-American male and a white female, had left the premises. The couple had rented the home for several months, Roderick said.

Detectives are looking for leads in the case. He said it's believed the occupants of the home left the area.

No one has been charged in the incident, Roderick said.
