MONROE - The Green County Law Enforcement and Public Safety Committee at its monthly meeting Wednesday, Sept. 5, approved purchasing three vehicles for the sheriff's department.

The department is buying two 2013 Chevrolet Impalas, at $20,956 each, and a 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe SUV for $29,691.

The vehicles are being purchased through a state bid process that is "way cheaper" than what local auto dealers can offer, according to Sheriff Jeff Skatrud.

The prices offered via the state is thousands of dollars lower than at local dealers, he said, adding, "I understand they'll be disappointed."

Committee Chair Dennis Dalton voted against the measure.

In other, Skatrud reported daily jail population was down an average of about six inmates in August from July. The daily August average was 50, with five on electronic monitoring and six on Huber work-release. As of Wednesday morning, Skatrud said the jail was housing only 45 inmates.

The new K-9 unit for the sheriff's department is in week two of training at a kennel in Iowa. Ike, a German Shepherd, is working with Deputy Cody Kanable and will be living with Kanable once they get back to Green County.

Ike and his training cost $12,300, Skatrud said. A $10,000 donation from the estate of Lois Ackerman, rural Monroe, helped pay for this. She specified in her will she wanted her money to go toward the purchase and training of a dog for the sheriff's department. She died in March.
