MONROE - The former chief of Brodhead police, Thomas Moczynski, has accepted a conditional nomination as chief deputy at the Green County Sheriff's Office, taking over retiring chief Dick Wyttenbach's position.

Sheriffs from Iowa and Grant counties and Green County board member Richard Toman unanimously recommended hiring Moczynski to the position. Former chief Wytten-bach retired from service on Sept. 5. Wytten-bach served at Green County for about 20 years and had 34 combined years in law enforcement.

Several people interviewed for the position besides Moczynski and about nine applied, three coming from within the sheriff's department.

Moczynski will take over the administrative and management responsibilities at the Green County Sheriff's Department, which consist of supervising employees, ensuring law and order is maintained by the employees, preventing crime and protecting the lives and property of Green County citizens. Sheriff Mark Rohloff said the position of second in command works about the same way as a chief of police.

"It should be a position that he is well accustomed to," Rohloff said.

Moczynski worked for Brodhead police for more than eight years, and has a combined 22 years of law enforcement experience, with 10 years for the Milwaukee police and four years with Sturgeon Bay police. Moczynski also served a full tour in the U.S. Navy and joined the Navy Reserves, retiring as a senior chief petty officer. Rohloff said he has an "outstanding" reputation around the county.

"When other chiefs heard he was applying for the job they all strongly recommended him ... at that point it became a really simple selection," Rohloff said.

He lives in Brodhead with his wife, Brenda, and their three boys. Rohloff said Moczynski was strongly supported throughout the selection process by many area officials. Moczynski will officially begin his duties with the sheriff's office on Nov. 17.
