MONROE — A string of car break-in reports in Browntown remain under investigation, officials say, and they are comparing notes with authorities in neighboring jurisdictions to determine if there’s any pattern to the incidents.
A gun was reportedly among the items stolen in the “several” reported crimes, according to Green County Sheriff Cody Kanable, who issued a statement detailing the August 5 incidents.
“Overnight and into this morning, Deputies with the Green County Sheriff’s Office responded to several reports of thefts and/or attempted thefts from motor vehicles in the Village of Browntown, WI,” said the statement. “From the seven currently known/reported incidents — several items were stolen from these victims which included the theft of firearms.”
As part of the investigation, according to Kanable, detectives are trying to identify if there is a pattern in the region with their counterparts in Lafayette County; and just south of the border in Illinois.
“Our detectives are still working on it,” said Kanable, adding that residents of rural areas and smaller towns should always be vigilant about locking doors and other security precautions.
Kanable also urged the public to contact Green County Crime Stoppers at 800-422-7463 or the sheriff’s department to report any evidence they may have about the case, especially images from the scene.
“The Green County Sheriff’s Office is requesting the assistance of community members to review any security camera footage from the previous evening into this morning for any suspicious content,” said the statement, adding that the department can also be contacted online.
