MONROE - SHARE, a nonprofit organization that provides food at a reduced cost for local families, is celebrating its 25th anniversary Saturday.
Families that take part in the SHARE food program can save between 40 and 50 percent off the price of food, said Joyce Fey, Monroe SHARE coordinator.
The SHARE program is open to anyone. There are no financial requirements to receive the discounted food. To be eligible for the program, people have to volunteer in some way for two hours a month. Any type of volunteer work is acceptable, Fey said.
People can receive a regular SHARE food box for $25, plus $3.50 for shipping, or a smaller food box for $15, plus $2.50 for shipping. Inside the larger box are six different kinds of meat and six or seven different kinds of fresh fruit, Fey said. Food amounts are smaller in the smaller boxes.
The food comes to the Monroe Moose Lodge once a month, usually the third or fourth Saturday. About a dozen people volunteer to help sort the food and get it ready for people to take home with them.
On Saturday, to help celebrate the organization's anniversary, there will be samples of some of the food offered by SHARE. People can come to the Moose Lodge, 639 3rd Ave., between 6:30 and 9 a.m.
For more information or to sign up for the SHARE program, call Fey at (608) 325-4641.
