MONROE-The Home- lessness Prevention Coalition of Green County is coordinating a Shanty-Town awareness and fundraiser event on Saturday, Nov. 13 on the Green County Courthouse lawn.
A planning meeting for the event is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11 at the University of Wisconsin-Extension office in the Green County Justice Center.
The Homelessness Prevention Coalition is a group of faith-based and area agency representatives, as well as concerned citizens. The group works to help local agencies provide emergency shelter.
To date the group has rented one apartment to a family with children. It have also developed a mentorship program to help people resolve life issues, find work, and provide support for people when they need it most.
Youth will bring small tents or large cardboard boxes and set up a shanty-town for one night on the Courthouse lawn. The event will take place in November to highlight the cold that homeless people may experience.
Youth will get sponsorships by making "cell phone calls. The event will last from 5 or 6 until 10 or 11 p.m.. There will be speakers, live music, and a soup kitchen-style food line.
In Green County, from Jan. 1 to Sept. 18 Green County Human Services has seen 115 unduplicated households that were homeless or near-homeless; in these households were 139 adults and 137 children. There were 112 unduplicated households in 2009.
