MONROE - An arrest warrant was issued for a Rockford man accused of sexually assaulting a Monroe woman after he did not appear for his preliminary hearing Wednesday in Green County Circuit Court.

Equez Collins, 21, is charged with one Class C felony count of second-degree sexual assault, stemming from an incident that occurred on March 1.

Collins' attorney Robert Nagel said he had spoken with Collins a week ago and that Collins was aware he had a court date in Monroe.

Court records indicate Collins sexually assaulted a woman in the back of a car under the pretense that he was giving the woman a ride home. After driving aimlessly around Monroe for a period of time, Collins allegedly pulled in between the Cenex gas station and the Hope Community Church, where he assaulted her.

According to the criminal complaint, Collins told a Monroe Police Department detective during an interview that he was in Monroe on the date of the alleged assault. DNA evidence taken from a cigarette butt that Collins had extinguished following the interview matched DNA found the night of the assault.

If convicted for the maximum penalty, Collins could face up to 40 years imprisonment or $100,000 in fines or both.
