ALBANY —  Albany police announced Jan. 13 that a sex offender who has served his prison term will be moving back into the community.

Matthew Wayne Schmid, 41, will be living at 502 3rd Street, authorities said. A white male, Schmid is just over 6 feet tall and 200 pounds. He has brown hair and blue eyes. He was found guilty in December 1997 on felony 2nd degree sexual assault of a child; and a Class D felony of 3rd degree sexual assault.

Schmid is a lifetime registrant of the state Department of Corrections Sex Offender Registry. He is no longer wanted by authorities.

“This notice is not intended to increase fear, rather, it is our belief that an informed public is a safer public,” Albany police wrote in the press release.
