Carrie and Randy Schwartz search for a Christmas tree during a tree sale for Monroe Youth Hockey at the SLICE Arena Tuesday night. The Schwartzes decided to go with the first tree they saw because of its fullness and size. I have a lot of ornaments, Carrie said. She said she likes the smell of the trees and has never had an artificial Christmas tree. (Times photo: Marissa Weiher)
MONROE - The Black Ice shop opened at Monroe's SLICE last weekend. Black Ice sells Christmas trees, wreaths and garland and is run by volunteers from Monroe Youth Hockey.

White pine, balsam and Fraser trees are available, according to Jen Ratke of Davis, Illinois, a volunteer whose son plays in the Avalanche hockey program. Ratke said her volunteer shifts typically last about two hours, and over the weekend trees were moving at a solid pace.

The shop is open from 5 to 7 p.m. on weekdays, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. New this year is the ice shanty repurposed for a shelter from the elements, labeled "Black Ice."

All trees are between 6 and 10 feet tall, though a few trees have come through at 12 feet, according to Ratke.
