MONROE - Four finalists vying for the position of city administrator will be in Monroe Oct. 8 and 9 for final interviews.
The City of Monroe Salary and Personnel Committee chose the finalists Monday after reviewing videos from 11 semi-finalists. Candidates for the city administrator position are Philip Rath, Clinton; Nathan Thiel, Houston, Tex.; Larry Thompson, Victoria, Minn.; and Kenneth Witt, Sparta.
The finalists will meet with city staff members, take a tour of the city and complete a writing exercise in addition to interviewing with city council members.
A reception for the candidates with Mayor Bill Ross and Common Council members is scheduled from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 8. The location was not disclosed.
Candidates will start their interviewing tasks at 8 a.m. Oct. 9.
Staff members will give input on the candidates to the Salary and Personnel Committee at 11 a.m. The committee and other council members are expected to choose a candidate after noon Oct. 9.
Should the city's offer be acceptable to the final candidate, the Common Council will make the offer and adopt the employment agreement in open session about Oct. 12.
Rath is now the administrator and clerk of the Village of Clinton (pop. 2,000). Rath was the administrator and clerk of the Village of Necedah, Wis. (pop. 2,300) from May to December 2004; and the City of Princeton (pop.1,600) from December 2004 to August 2007.
Rath holds a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and a B.A. in economics from Ripon College.
Thiel is presently with the Budget Analyst-Budget & Research Department in the City of Sugar Land, Tex. (pop. 80,000). Previously, he was an assistant to the Director of Public Works in the Village of Riverside, Ill. (pop. 8,300) from July 2007 to May 2009 and was an intern and financial analyst for Onondaga County and Town of Kirkland, N.Y., from October 2006 to May 2007.
Thiel holds a Master of Public Administration degree from Maxwell School of Citizenship at Syracuse University and a B.A. in communications from Brigham Young University-Idaho.
Thompson is vice-president of Concero Companies. He was a vice president of Sienna Corp. from November 1997 to December 2008; city administrator of River Falls, Wis. (pop. 13,000) between 1995 and 1997 and of Farmington, Minn. (pop. 9,500) between 1983 and 1995, and clerk and treasurer of Belle Plaine, Minn. (pop. 3,000) between 1980 and 1983.
Thompson holds a M.A. in public administration and a B.S. in political science from the Mankato State University. He has completed the Blandin Leadership Program and the University of Minnesota Extension Service Leadership Program.
Witt is the city administrator of Sparta (pop. 9,274). He was village administrator, clerk-treasurer of East Troy (pop. 3,564) from June 1996 to September 2001 and staff accountant with Hanill, Nelson & Wenger, LLP from 1995 to 1996.
Witt holds a Master of Public Administration degree from University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, a Certified Public Manager degree from UW-Madison, and a B.S. in business administration from UW-Whitewater.
