MONROE - The next school year will start after the Labor Day holiday in September for Monroe students, according to the 2017-18 district calendar approved by the Monroe school board Monday.

Students up to grade nine will kick off the year on Sept. 5, while those in 10th through 12th grade will start on Sept. 6.

There will be no school on Nov. 23 and 24 for the Thanksgiving holiday. Winter break extends from Dec. 25 through Jan. 1. Students will have an additional day off on Jan. 2 due to an in-service day.

Spring break in 2018 is scheduled from March 26 through April 2.

The last full day of school will be June 6, 2018, with June 7 as an early-release day, unless inclement weather causes more than one snow day during the school year.

One-hour early release will continue to be on Mondays, with the exception of full days on Oct. 23, Nov. 20 and June 4, 2018.

MOMENT OF SILENCE

During the board meeting, president Bob Erb asked everyone in attendance to observe a moment of silence in honor of the three Monroe High School students who died as the result of a car accident on Friday.

"It's a really difficult time for our district," Erb said, expressing gratitude to district staff and administrators, as well as to the community for its support of the families and friends of the victims. "We're a really tight community, and I think that certainly makes a huge difference now for many, many people."

District Administrator Cory Hirsbrunner said districts across the state have reached out to the Monroe school district, some providing lunches for high school staff or offering to send their own staff members to Monroe to help.

Board treasurer Brian Keith encouraged support for emergency responders, saying "they're going through a tough time also."
