BRODHEAD - The Brodhead School District will levy $3.53 million in school taxes for the 2012-2013 school year, about $61,000, or 1.7 percent, less than $3.59 million last year.

The tax rate required to support the levy is $8.81 per $1,000 of property value, which is 33 cents, or 3.5 percent, less than $9.14 per $1,000 of property value last year. Equalized property values in some areas of the district rose slightly more than 1 percent this past year.

Under the new tax rate, the owner of a $100,000 home will pay $881 and the owner of a $150,000 home will pay $1,322 for their local school district taxes.

The total levy amount covers $2.8 million for general funds, $684,000 for referendum-approved and non-referendum debt and $2,000 for community service funds. Taxes needed to support general funds, which provides for the majority of operational expenses, are up about $144,000, and for debt expenses are down about $221,000 compared to the 2011-12 unaudited budget. Community service expenses are stable.

The decreases in levy and taxes come despite a 3.6 percent drop in state aid, $254,000 less compared to last year when the district received $7.11 million. The district will receive $6.86 million in state aid for 2012-13.

The district's total budget is about $10.9 million, up a half million from $10.37 million last year. Instruction expenses are up about $262,000 and support services and administration are up $3,000.

Instructional service payments (which may include extra classes, band consortium, summer school, shared curriculum development, tuition or open enrollment) make up $137,000 for the increase, while inter-fund transfers takes up $131,000 of the total budget increase.
