Safety pays off on Justice Center

MONROE - Because Green County kept a close on eye on safety during the Justice Center construction project, the county received a check of more than $100,000 from the Wisconsin County Mutual Insurance Company on Tuesday, according to the company that performed safety checks on the construction project.

There were only four incidents of minor injuries during the year-long construction process. None of the people injured lost any time on the job.

The check for $111,886 was presented to the board by Vance Forrest, vice president of Risk Management for Aegis Corp., which manages the county's insurance company.

"A lot of people deserve credit for this," Forrest said, "including the people who came to Green County to work safely."

The county took part in a program in which it paid for any worker compensation claims during construction of the multi-million dollar project, which was completed in September 2009.

"Green County had in place a team for this project that made safety a top priority," Forrest said.

Aegis Corp. conducted regular safety visits to the Justice Center project and also conducted on-site safety training.

The money the county received will go to the cost of construction for the Justice Center. According to Green County Clerk Mike Doyle, the building came in about $200,000 under budget.

The 64,700-square-foot Justice Center houses the county's court system as well as the University of Wisconsin-Extension offices. The county board voted in September 2007 to build the $12.6 million center. Construction began in September 2008. The building was opened in September 2009.
