MADISON — Now in its 35th year, the Tavern League of Wisconsin’s SafeRide Program continues to be a model for the rest of the nation. The Tavern League’s commitment to eliminate drunk driving from Wisconsin’s roadways is documented in its recently released SafeRide Survey of more than 60 counties in the state. 

In 2018-19, TLW member establishments provided 92,959 free rides home to their patrons, up over 1,700 rides from the previous year and double the rides provided in 2007. In Green County, 179 rides were given at a cost of $901.25.

Thanks in part to the SafeRide Program found in 1,753 TLW member establishments, Wisconsin has witnessed a 44% decline in OWI convictions since 2007 and nearly a 50% decline in alcohol related fatalities during that same time period.

The cost of the SafeRide Program, which is nearly $1 million, is shared by hardworking TLW members as well as funds generated by surcharges on OWI convictions.

According to TLW Executive Director Pete Madland, the program’s status as the largest and most successful alternative transportation program in the country to address the issue of operating a motor vehicle while impaired, is due to TLW members.

The Tavern League’s SafeRide Program is now considered the standard for other states as they strive to combat the issue of drunk driving. In fact, the program has become so well-known, according to Madland, it has been recognized by the National Conference of Mayors for its effort to reduce alcohol-related crashes and fatalities.

This fall, the Tavern League of Wisconsin will be launching a promotional campaign to raise awareness of the SafeRide Program. Recently, TV ads were completed and will be running statewide over the next year.
