DODGEVILLE — Wisconsin State Representative Todd Novak announced his candidacy for re-election in the 51st Assembly District April 16.
Prior to serving in state government, Novak worked as an associate editor at the Dodgeville Chronicle. His work at the paper allowed him to develop strong ties to his community and sparked his interest in local government. Now he serves as the chair of the committee on local government and is a strong advocate for our rural areas.
Novak authored a bill creating the Frank Lloyd Wright Trail commemorating the famous Richland Center architect. He also got the state to fund a matching grant for the Monroe Arts Center expansion and worked closely with the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department to secure state funding for a drug task force.
In Sauk County, Novak took the lead in returning control of White Mound County Park to the county, and when he was made aware of a statute preventing a local church in Browntown from building a stairway lift to improve access to their facilities, he authored a bill creating an exemption for historic churches like theirs. When a fourth grade class at Mineral Point Elementary reached out to him with an idea, Rep. Novak authored a bill making cheese the official state dairy product of Wisconsin.
Novak also led the efforts to address water quality in Wisconsin. When challenges emerged from the southwest area of the state, he called on the Speaker to create a bipartisan task force to research these issues and come up with solutions.
Novak was appointed Chairman of the Speaker’s Task Force on Water Quality and worked closely with his democrat colleague, Rep. Katrina Shankland, to introduce 13 policy proposals that passed with overwhelming bipartisan support.
Rep. Novak also authored Marsy’s Law, a constitutional amendment ensuring crime victims receive equal rights in the judicial process. The amendment received overwhelming support in the legislature and again in the spring election.
The 51st Assembly District includes parts of Green, Lafayette, Iowa, Sauk and Richland Counties.
