BRODHEAD - Hundreds of Green County residents will join together at the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Green County from 4 to 11:30 p.m. Saturday at the Brodhead High School track in Brodhead.
The purpose is to help save more lives from cancer and to celebrate this year's theme "Color Your World Without Cancer," according to a news release. The community is invited to attend the event and celebrate with people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and take action to finish the fight once and for all. There will be several specialty laps and events, beginning with the survivor reception at 3 p.m.
Pastor Krystal Goodger will offer the prayer for the opening ceremony at 4 p.m. This will be followed by the flag raising by the Brodhead Boy Scouts, the national anthem by Josie Picard and the Survivor/Caregiver Lap. Tami Jacobson will be introduced as the 2017 honorary survivor during the opening ceremony. The food stand will open and the silent auction will begin.
The walk begins at 4:30 p.m. Attendees will have a chance to meet the hospice therapy dogs, and luminaria sales will open.
Kids games and contests, including a coloring contest and water balloon toss, will be from 5 to 6 p.m.
The Power of Purple Lap will start at 5:30 p.m. Walkers are encouraged to wear purple in support of all cancer survivors. A frozen T-shirt contest will be at 6 p.m. The Make Some Noise Lap will be at 6:30 p.m.
A presentation on the new hospice home in Monroe will be done by Zo Anne Anderson and Lisa Schweitzer at 7 p.m. A dessert auction featuring auctioneer Steve Benton and a special auctioneer song will be at 7:15 p.m.

The Luminaria Ceremony will be at 9:15 p.m. Team Recognition and the 25-Year Survivor Teams Lap will be at 10:15 p.m.
The closing ceremony will be at 10:45 p.m.
Relay For Life events are community gatherings where teams and individuals camp out and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Teams participate in fundraising in the months leading up to the event. Dollars raised help the American Cancer Society by funding groundbreaking cancer research, supporting education and risk reduction efforts, and providing free information and critical services for people with cancer who need them.
In addition to the support of the community, Relay For Life of Green County also is supported by many businesses and organizations. The event's 2017 major sponsors include Monroe Clinic, Colony Brands, Baumgartner's Cheese Store and Tavern, Speich Oil, and Ruda Chevrolet and Toyota.
