MADISON - A rural Darlington man who is a registered sex offender pleaded guilty Wednesday in federal court to engaging in sexually explicit conduct with a minor in order to produce child pornography.

Timmy J. Reichling, 47, was staying at his parents' residence from at least 2008 to 2009 when he made a sexually explicit video tape of a minor female, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Altman.

On part of the tape Reichling is seen wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet, used by those on probation, Altman said.

Reichling kept a camera under a bed positioned to photograph the girl's genitals, he said.

Reichling pleaded guilty to one count of a four-count indictment issued in October that alleged he engaged in sexually explicit conduct with a second minor in February 2012, received sexually explicit photographs of a third minor in December 2011 or January 2012, and possessed a computer hard drive that contained child pornography.

According to a document filed in federal court:

Reichling allegedly began a Facebook relationship with a minor female and within six weeks she was sending him nude photographs of herself. When she wanted to stop, Reichling threatened to show the photos to others if she did.

Reichling's attorney unsuccessfully tried to get a computer hard drive and cell phone seized from his parents' County F residence, arguing that the Lafayette County search warrant was invalid.

After being charged in Lafayette County Circuit Court with multiple counts of child exploitation and possessing child pornography, federal authorities took jurisdiction of the case because the video tape and camera Reichling used traveled in interstate commerce.

His case was set for trial on June 16.

In court on Wednesday, Reichling told District Judge Barbara Crabb that between March and July 2008 he got a minor to do exercises in the nude while he made a videotape of her.

Crabb continued Reichling's detention until his Aug. 20 sentencing when he faces a mandatory minimum of 25 years in prison due to a prior sexual offense.

Reichling was convicted in Green County in 1996 on three counts of second-degree sexual assault by use of force and one count of false imprisonment.

He was sentenced to terms of six and eight years in prison but it is unclear from online court records if the terms were to be served consecutively or concurrent.

Reichling is a life registrant of the state's sex offender registry.
