MONROE - People talked, told stories and laughed at Saturday's Green County Breakfast on the Farm.

There are many reasons why people enjoy the breakfasts year after year.

"The food is really good," said Elton Segner, Monroe.

He and his wife Darlyne were at the DeVoe farm by 6 a.m. to eat breakfast. They came for the meal, but also attended the annual event to see friends, Elton said.

The breakfast brings together all age groups from the country and the city. Eggs, sausage and coffee cakes were ready for the first visitors. And, of course, strawberry sundaes were ready for dessert.

Gilman and Hattie Harry, Brooklyn, were some of the first guests to arrive. Getting up early in the morning isn't new to them: they farmed for many years.

"I get up at about 10 minutes to 4 (a.m.) every morning," he laughed.

"I wanted to see how farming has changed," Harry said. "It's always nice to visit another farm to see how they do things."

For Catherine Speckman, 8, Brodhead, the dairy breakfast is about the animals. She and other children were able to pet the goats, horses and llamas at the farm. Her favorite animal to see was the horse, she said.

People came from all over to see the live entertainment, crafts and tours offered at the Alan and Yvonne DeVoe farm, located south of Monroe at N266 Twin Grove Road.

Buses left from various points throughout Green County and cars waited near the farm for a place to park in fields near the breakfast site.

About 5,000 people were expected to attend the breakfast, which has taken place every year since 1961.
