BRODHEAD — A Beloit man crashed his vehicle in a muddy field and was arrested after leading deputies on a two-mile chase in rural Brodhead on Sunday, March 17, according to the Green County Sheriff’s Office.

Vernon M. Benson Jr., 25, Beloit, sustained non-life threatening injuries in the crash and was taken by deputies to the Monroe Clinic ER for treatment, then jailed.

He faces charges of knowingly fleeing an officer, obstructing an officer and possession of amphetamine. He was cited for speeding, reckless driving, failure to stop at a stop sign, improper stop at a railroad crossing, driving with a suspended license, failure to wear a seatbelt and non-registration of an auto.

Deputies tried to stop Benson’s vehicle for speeding at 4:48 p.m. in the W2000 block of Wisconsin 11, Town of Spring Grove.

The vehicle instead continued westbound at a high rate of speed, turned northbound on Bagley Road and then turned down a private driveway.

Benson then reportedly lost control, left the driveway and struck an embankment before briefly returning to the driveway and then continuing through a field, where the vehicle got stuck in mud.

Benson was taken into custody at the scene of the crash. The Brodhead Police Department assisted.
