MONROE - Tractor and truck drivers will be pulling for Green County people and groups in need this weekend at the Green County Fairgrounds.

The fourth annual Green County Fall Nationals' (GCFN) tractor and truck pull takes place from 1 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the fairgrounds.

The event will bring about 100 entries to Green County for the tractor and truck pull from all across the Midwest, organizer Mark Hawthorn said. He expects about a dozen new entries to the contest.

The tractor and truck pull is more than just a display of power and smoke, Hawthorn said.

It's also about helping people.

Since the Green County Fall Nationals started the tractor and truck pull four years ago, the group has given about $50,00 to local charities and families in need, Hawthorn said. The organization is a non-profit group, and its mission is to help people throughout Green County.

Last year, the organization presented more than 11,000 pounds of food to the Green Cares food pantry in Monticello. The group also played "Secret Santa" to several families in the area, Hawthorn said. Last year, group delivered Christmas gifts to a little girl whose father died shortly before Christmas. The group also helped a family who have a daughter with cancer, and helped fix a car for a family that needed transportation.

The people helped by the GCFN were referred by GCFN friends and family members. Those who receive financial assistance were checked out by the group to make sure they really needed help.

"We don't want to give money to people who don't need it," Hawthorn said. "We want to give the money to families that need some extra help."

Hawthorn wouldn't say where the profits from this year's event will go. He said the group prefers to keep its donations a surprise. However, he did say there are plans to set up scholarships for area students.

Tickets for the tractor and truck pull are $15 in advance. The ticket cost covers the tractor and truck pull, music at 8 p.m. by the band "Madison Country" and a chance to enter a drawing to win prizes such as a television, a chainsaw, food and other items. There will also be a beer garden and food stands at the event.

Cost for tickets at the gate $10. The tickets at the gate don't include the prize drawing.
