MONROE - A community notification meeting to inform the public about the release of two sex offenders will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Monroe City Hall.
Gary J. Dunlavey and Jeffrey H. Bahn will be moving to Monroe on or about Jan. 9. Both are registered with the Wisconsin Sex Offender Registry site.Sex offender release notification meetings have been held in the past to create awareness in the community, Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley said.
"An informed public is a safer public," Kelley said.
However, Kelley said the purpose of the meeting isn't to create panic or fear.
"The purpose of the meeting is to emphasize the need to practice protective behaviors," Kelley said in a press release issued Monday.
At the meeting, members of the Department of Corrections and the Monroe Police Department will provide information about sex offenders in general; provide information about the two men who will be released into Monroe, including some specific information and their offenses and rules of supervision; how to protect children from sex offenders and how to talk to them about protective behaviors.
Kelley said the meeting isn't to harass or further punish the offender, nor to traumatize victims or hamper the offenders' chances of reintegration into the community.
