DARLINGTON — A woman was sentenced this week to 30 days in jail and two years on probation for having drugs in the Belmont home she shared with her 4-year-old son.
Tiffany Ann Chandler, 24, pleaded guilty Nov. 18 to felony charges of possessing methamphetamine and narcotic drugs and to a misdemeanor charge of neglecting a child by negligently failing to provide protection from exposure to the distribution or manufacture of controlled substances.
Other charges, including possessing drug paraphernalia, were dismissed as part of a plea deal. She is eligible to have the convictions expunged from her record if she successfully completes probation.
Chandler is allowed Huber release privileges for work, child visits and drug treatment while in jail. Conditions of her probation include submitting to random drug testing. She is assessed about $1,000 in court and probation fines and fees.
The meth and child neglect convictions stem from an investigation at her then-home on North Penn Street in Belmont on Dec. 30, hours after her mother found her vomiting in her bed and Chandler was taken by ambulance to a hospital for drug-related medical problems.
Police found a baggie with meth in it and syringes scattered around Chandler’s bedroom, according to court records.
She told police she was injecting herself with a half-gram to a gram of meth daily. She said she previously used heroin but switched to meth about six months earlier “because she did not want to die,” an officer noted.
Chandler was living at the time with her mother and 4-year-old son. Chandler’s mother was the primary caregiver for the boy.
An investigating officer noted the boy “appeared to be in good spirits” and had lots of energy, a good appetite and no visible injuries. He told the officer he in his grandmother’s bedroom and rarely went into his mother’s bedroom.
Chandler told the officer she would never harm her son slept and reaffirmed that he rarely went into her bedroom.
In August, in a separate case for which she also received probation, Chandler was found in the possession of narcotic drugs. Over the summer, she was cited in Grant and Sauk counties for retail theft. She also has pending felony bail jumping charges in Columbia County, from an incident Aug. 25.
Court records indicate she is now living in Potosi.
