MONROE - The Zilmer-Riley American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 84 members and veterans will be distributing hand-made poppies Friday as part of Monroe's annual Poppy Day.
Contributions to the Poppy Program are designed to benefit America's veterans nationally by helping raise money for veterans who are hospitalized and in need of care and their families. Wisconsin has veterans hospital in Madison, Milwaukee and Tomah.
Veterans can receive therapy and rest at the Camp American Legion near Lake Tomahawk. Any veterans who use the facilities receives personal items, treats, stationery, tote bags, tray favors, postage and other items.
Poppy proceeds also benefits the Christmas Gift Shop in December in which hospitalized veterans can choose gifts for their families. The gifts were wrapped and shipped to the veterans at no cost.
The headquarters for Poppy Day will be at the American Legion Post No. 84 Home, 1627 12th Ave., Monroe. Committee members for Poppy Day are Frances Wells, Helen Miller and Glades Schild.
