MONROE - Summer sun, water and kids just seem to go naturally together.
The Monroe Women's Club made that a little easier for some families this year, by donating $500 to the Parks and Recreation Department for pool scholarships.
The funds will be added to the existing program that helps families afford pool visits.
Supervisor Marjorie Klinzing said the department will advertise more to spread the word about the extra scholarships, and to credit the Monroe Women's Club for the help.
Look for more information on the city's local cable channel. Applications will be available at the Human Services and Monroe Parks and Recreation offices.
The Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners Wednesday heard about the donation at Wednesday's meeting. Absent were Council representative Paul Hannes, Gail Murray and Barb Gelbach.
Also at Wednesday's meeting:
Monroe High School's swim team, represented by team coach Linda Moser, was unanimously granted permission to host a swim-a-thon at the outdoor pool from 8 p.m. Fri., Aug. 15 until 9 a.m. Sat., Aug. 16. Team members will seek pledges to raise needed funds for the team.
Moser said the event will help during a time when school budgets are tight. Last year, the event raised $1,400, and was used to purchase a pace clock.
Verona Swim Club, represented by Joanne Weeden, Monroe, sought to rent time at the pool for practice this summer. Verona and the Monroe Area Swim Team worked out a use agreement for times and lanes, which the commission voted to accept.
The commission later set a rate of $55 an hour which includes one life guard.
Verona, with about 20-25 swimmers, will furnish two extra guards for its team and a certificate of insurance. Verona will be using the pool on some Wednesday and Saturday mornings starting June 7.
Mary Soddy brought a proposal to take team and individual pictures of the youth baseball and softball teams sponsored by the department. After discussion, the commission unanimously decided to postpone a decision until more information could be gathered.
Klinzing updated the commissioners on the summer programs, the traveling baseball and softball teams and seasonal wages and contracts. Commissioners unanimouslyapproved the wage levels and contracts.
