MONROE - The Monroe Police Department will be participating in the Safe Communities "Slow Down" Campaign, which began Tuesday, according to a press release by the department.
School is out soon, and based on numerous recent complaints about vehicles speeding in several areas of Monroe, police will be working on speeding enforcement, as well as partnering with the Safe Communities Organization in a yard sign campaign. As part of this campaign, yard signs will pop up in yards across Monroe reminding motorists to slow down and Watch for kids, the release said.
Some areas that the Police will be concentrating on include 6th Street from 20th Avenue to 30th Avenue, 14th Avenue from 7th Street to 2nd Street, 21st Street from 15th Avenue east, 8th Street from Wisconsin 69 to 6th Avenue West and 4th Avenue West from West 8th Street to West 21st Street. These areas have a higher concentration of accidents, as well as generating a higher volume of citizen complaints.
When child pedestrians are hit by cars, it's usually as they dart out between cars mid-block. Please drive slower and be on the lookout for kids, the release said.
Overall, many traffic crashes in Monroe are speed-related. As such, the police department has joined in the Slow Down Campaign, not just to prevent pedestrian accidents, but to reduce speed-related accidents in general.
