BRODHEAD - The 54-year-old old man found drowned in Sugar River Mill Race on Saturday morning apparently had an underlying medical condition that contributed to his death, authorities said on Tuesday.
Previously, an autopsy concluded the cause of death to be drowning. But it was unclear how the man, identified Monday as Steven J. Webber, got into the water.
"I spoke to my investigator today and we suspect that there was underlying medical condition that caused him to accidentally fall into the water," said Brodhead Police Chief Tom Moczynski, who declined to elaborate, citing health care privacy laws.
Moczynski said Webber had family in the area and had recently moved to Brodhead to be near them.
A passerby discovered his body at about 10:45 a.m. in a man-made tributary of the Sugar River that flows through Brodhead.
